"Planning your painting, drawing, mixing colours, controlling the brush, how much water... I show you everything you need to paint a good watercolour"

Watercolour or Pen and Wash Demonstrations

For your art group, club or society

Anywhere in the country, I can come to your art club, society or just a group of friends. If you would like to sit back and watch watercolour painting techniques explained in an easy and entertaining way, then you will enjoy my demonstration, which typically takes around two hours. Ask as many questions as you like, I may not know all the answers but I’ll do my best!

. . . . Thank you for giving us such an interesting demonstration and talk. Several of our members have since said how much your help and suggestions will assist them . . . . PM Attleborough

. . . . It was a revelation to see how simple Stephen made it appear . . . . within the space of two hours he had come up with a painting that would take pride of place in anyone’s home . . . . BT Dersingham

I demonstrate in watercolour, pen and wash, and ink and watercolour, but often my demonstrations will include a planning sketch first of all, usually in charcoal. My subject is always a landscape of some sort, and I generally try to keep the composition quite simple and use only a limited palette of colours. Norfolk landscapes seem very popular, but I sometimes 'visit' the North of England, or other locations, just to make a change.

Although I usually choose one of my own photos or sketches as the starting point for a painting, I do also demonstrate in the style of other well known watercolour artists, particularly Edward Seago and Rowland Hilder. There is much to learn from studying these masters, and they had interesting lives too. So, if you would like to find out a little of their working methods, then ask me for a Seago or Hilder demonstration.

I try to keep my fees as reasonable as possible and you can find more information about costs here. I look forward to meeting your group so feel free to contact me to discuss your requirements.

I have brush and will travel

I have demonstrated for many art societies, and I will freely share my twenty plus years of experience in watercolour and ink with pen and brush.
